These are the eyes of hopelessness! These are the features of a dead man! This is the image of death itself!
There is nothing humorous or pathetic here. This is frighteningly real ... a man on the cusp of meeting his Maker ... lost, lifeless, and alone; resolved to a future without meaning!
Regardless of his guilt or innocence, we should not see John Karr as anything but a doomed man needing Jesus. Our hearts should break at the sight of this poor creature!
If he did the crime let him do the time, but you and I should be praying for his salvation ... praying that the prodigal will come home and find his Father waiting by the gate. [Luke 15:11-32]
