The U.S. Supreme Court's decision to hear a challenge to Oregon's assisted suicide law comes as a surprise. Lower court decisions have all gone in Oregon's favor, and the law hasn't produced contradictory rulings among different federal courts. The Supreme Court must see a legal issue in the Oregon case that demands resolution. No matter what the court decides, however, the underlying social and moral dispute will remain.
