Brother Roger, the head of the tranquil Taize community in Burgundy [France], known worldwide for its devotion to peace, was attacked by a woman during Tuesday night's prayer service.

Witnesses said she surged out of the congregation in the community's church at about 8:45pm. Brother Roger's throat was cut, he bled profusely and died 15 minutes after the attack, Brother Emile, a spokesman for the community, said.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
