Our system of punishment was designed to achieve justice for society as well as victims. If the man to the right is given clemency it accomplishes much:
The California Conservative has an excellent round-up of major blogging on the Williams' issue, plus a straw poll which was running over two-to-one for execution at the moment.
- It will cheapen clemency in general; clemency will be left with little meaning for those who truly deserve it.
- Court proceedings become an exercise in futility; disenfranchising both juries and judges.
- Since punishment is calculated to fit the crime, if the ultimate outcome is less than a good fit, justice is mocked.
- Criminals at all levels will be encouraged to play games with the system; the more notorious the killer the bigger the games that will be played (for example Williams).
- The MSM and the entertainment industry will have been given active roles in our justice system; they should be given no leverage in clemency decisions at any level, at all.
- As an example of how careless clemency can affect things, consider how Clinton's pardons (a form of clemency) of several criminals (e.g., Marc Rich, now a suspect in the UN oil-for-food scandal) at the end of his presidency sullied an already sullied office.
Capital punishment; Clemency; Crime and punishment; Death penalty; Tookie Williams
