Prince Rainier III, whose fairy-tale marriage to American film star Grace Kelly brought elegance and glamour to one of Europe's oldest dynasties, died Wednesday, nearly a month after he was hospitalized with a lung infection.
For weeks the headlines were filled with deadly potential as Terri Schiavo and Pope John Paul II faced-off with the Grim Reaper ... in the end both lost the battle. Arafat a few of months ago. Now Rainer.
In just three short months we've lost: Shirley Chisholm, Virginia Mayo, Zhao Ziyang, Johnny Carson, Max Schmeling, Ossie Davis, Arthur Miller, Sister Lucia de Jesus dos Santos, Sandra Dee, Hunter S. Thompson, Chris LeDoux, John DeLorean, Johnnie Cochran, and Saul Bellow.
Ha! Didn't know that last one, did you? Neither did I! Bellow just sort of past away without being noticed in all the Schiavo and Pope hoopla!
Who's next? Margaret Thatcher is not doing too well. Though invited, Billy Graham is not well enough to attend the requiem for the Pope. Jerry Falwell remains in serious condition.
Many other celebrities and world leaders are elderly or at death's door ... Liz Taylor, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Doris Day, Henry Kissinger, Ted Turner, Maureen O'Hara, Paul McCartney, Yoko Ono, and many others of my time!
History is played out right before our eyes; perhaps this age of decadence and excess is coming to an end, perhaps God is setting the stage to remind us all of our perishable and mortal nature.
