If you think a compromise is a legitimate option in this filibuster frenzy we're witnessing you are out of your mind (if you are a conservative) and on the lunatic fringe (if you are an evangelical).
Everything you've hoped for, worked for, or dreamed of is tied up in this seminal event ... pro-life issues (abortion, euthanasia, end-of-life decisions, stem cell research, designer babies, etc.), the future of the Supreme Court (at a minimum Bush will make to nominations, one of which will be the Chief Justice), education (what the government is allowed to do or not to do to our children), and national security (illegal aliens, immigration reform, border control, voting, identification, regulation of foreign commercial vehicles, etc.) ... plus much more!
A compromise is out of the question for three reasons:
- the Republican leadership will be seen by their base for what they are - weak and ineffective!
- the party will lose tens of thousands of their 2004 voting base in the 2006 elections ... frankly Christians would rather stay home than vote for immoral losers
- and if any one of the President's nominees does not get an up or down vote on the floor, we will appear to have been a mouse that roared.
Understand this ... this one event is a linchpin for much of your future and your grandkids' future.
