I first saw Shelby Foote in Ken Burn's classic Civil War documentary on PBS in 1991.
I was intrigued by this gentlemanly guy who seemed to personify the Southern historian that my mind had unknowingly created. I said to myself, "I like that guy!" And I’ve listened every time I've heard him mentioned since.
We'll miss you Shelby; American history will not be the same without you.
