Possibly the author is more right than he might realize ... elections are never about popularity, they are about issues and only a party's base knows the real issues.
Those issues cross over party line, race, ethnic heritage, alma mater, education level, economics, and community organizations. I give you Reagan Democrats and the Pennsylvania Hockey Moms in the linked article.
What people do when they are turned-on rather than turned-off always surprises the experts.
